Stone Temple Pilots bass player Robert DeLeo names the songs that have most connected with fans and tells the stories behind tracks from their Tiny Music album. English singer, Paul Young, recorded a version of this song in 1991. It was also sampled in Luke Boyd’s (also known as Classified) song titled “It Ain’t Over”.

Young's version, released by Columbia, was produced by Dan Hartman, and featured Paul Carrack singing the fourth chorus and performing the keyboard and synthesizers. The fourth single from their self-titled debut album, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” is widely considered Crowded House’s signature song. During initial release in 1987, it topped singles charts in Canada and New Zealand, reached number 2 in the US Billboard Hot 100, and was also top 10 in Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway. “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, which was unveiled in October 1986, was the fourth song to be released from the eponymous maiden album of Australian band, Crowded House. In summary, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” tells the story of a personal bond strong enough to withstand the deluge of life. It’s written from the perspective of one half of a duo, but it reveals that the affection goes both ways.

The Music and Melody

The next time you play this song, let this little piece of history make it even more enjoyable. As with many truly great pieces of art, this song seems to have come from somewhere beyond its creator. Neil Finn openly admits to this strange phenomenon and is proud to have brought this music to such a wide audience. He’s traveling through “shadows” in a tight space, but he doesn’t feel confined or lost.

Released as the fourth single from their self-titled debut album in 1986, this song has since become an anthem for many, resonating with listeners across generations. The chorus is a less philosophical but more passionate encouragement. Finn tells his listener not to “dream it’s over,” meaning they shouldn’t call it quits. He admits that things will get difficult “when the world comes in,” but he’s confident in victory.

Paul Young version

The “door to your [his listener’s] heart.” Simply put, Finn is demanding to be let in. Nonetheless, the duo doesn’t let the negativity in the world get them down. The next verse is more specific, which makes it harder to interpret.

The Story Behind “Don’t Dream It’s Over”

In the subsequent verses, the artist expresses how certain events and people are trying to separate him from his lover, yet he makes a firm decision to focus on building their bond. Seeing that his partner may be swayed by external pressures he repeatedly tells her not to dream about their relationship ending, because they will win. Crowded House in this track reassures a partner about their relationship while urging her not to lose hope or give up on her dreams.

In fact, the track was featured in a 1994 adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, which further boosted the song’s notoriety. Other artists (Paul Young, Sixpence None The Richer, and Stan Walker) have paid tribute to this classic with their own cover versions. “Don’t Dream It’s Over” was fully written in the following twenty-four hours.

The lyrics resonate with me deeply, serving as a reminder to embrace the freedom and possibilities available to me, even in the face of challenges. The chorus, with its powerful declaration that they won’t win, has been a source of strength during moments when it felt like the world was trying to tear me down. Neil Finn’s masterful songwriting continues to shine in the second verse, where he introduces a more personal element to the song.

The line “They come, they come to build a wall between us, we know they won’t win” celebrates the strength of human connection and the resilience of the human spirit. "Closing Time" by Semisonic was written by the lead singer when his wife was pregnant. In 1991, English musician Paul Young covered "Don't Dream It's Over" on his first compilation album, From Time to Time – The Singles Collection (1991).

In conclusion, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House serves as a timeless anthem for resilience, freedom, and the power of human connection. Through its thought-provoking lyrics, the song encourages us to hold on to our dreams, resist the walls that the world may try to build between us, and cherish the relationships that bring us liberation and release. Diving into the lyrics of “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House, we find a deep and introspective message about freedom, resilience, and the importance of human connection.

Crowded House’s lead singer and songwriter Neil Finn has said that “Don’t Dream It’s Over” was inspired by his experiences living in Los Angeles and feeling disconnected from his homeland of New Zealand. The song was written during a time when Finn was struggling with homesickness and a sense of displacement, which inspired him to write a song that expressed the human desire for connection and a sense of belonging. Music has an undeniable impact on our emotions and helps us process complex feelings when words alone simply aren’t enough.

All people can understand that hard times are when we need one another the most. The companions we trust to weather storms with are the people closest to us. This universal part of human experience is the true source of this track’s success and timelessness. Additionally, the song’s call for human connection and the importance of cherishing our relationships with others deeply resonates within me. It serves as a reminder to nurture the connections that bring joy and light into our lives, as they can be a source of liberation and release. On the surface, "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts is just a song about a guy coming home from work, but the duo claimed it had a deeper meaning about finding direction in one's personal life.

As we dissect the lyrics, the song paints a vivid picture of the complexities of life. There is a sense that despite the battles we face and the challenges that may arise, there is still freedom and possibility available to us. The line “Try to catch a deluge in a paper cup” beautifully captures the idea of trying to contain something vast and overwhelming in something small and fragile.

The enemy won’t be able to “build a wall” between Finn and his listener. In a world that can often feel disconnected and divided, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” remains a powerful reminder of the human capacity for hope and resilience. Through its haunting melody and optimistic lyrics, the song speaks to a universal struggle that we all face at some point in our lives. Whether we’re dealing with the challenges of a new environment or simply striving to achieve our dreams, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” encourages us to keep going and never give up. In 2022, he released his first album "Dive" under the name "Arctotherium". The music and melody of “Don’t Dream It’s Over” complement the lyrics perfectly, creating an atmosphere of both melancholy and beauty.

A home’s Zillow listing is often the first impression for prospective buyers, and accurate information helps attract interest. If you are up for the work, there are other ways that you can try to estimate your property value. However, these methods may not be accurate and can take a lot of your time. We recommend working with an agent that already has in-depth experience with properties in your neighborhood.

What is a home valuation tool?

Determining how much your house is worth depends on a number of factors, and can fluctuate, up or down, throughout the years. Some of those factors are in your control, like if you made home improvements to boost the value of your house. Others, like the current economy and local housing market trends, are less in your control. Redfin displays its own home value estimates on the home profiles on its website. It says it bases its estimates on hundreds of data points, including information about the home itself, the neighborhood the home is in, the overall real estate market and more.

This is what your property taxes are based on — the dollar value of your property as determined by your area’s local tax assessors. It can go up as your home appreciates in value, but it is typically lower than the amount the home could actually sell for. There are three main types of home valuation, and all might assign slightly different dollar amounts to the same house. For example, the same home may have an assessed value of $300K, an appraised value of $395K and a fair market value of $400K. There are a variety of ways to get the information you need, depending on how much time and effort you are willing to put in, as well as cost if you seek professional help. This approach will not yield a completely accurate number, but should give you a ballpark figure to guide your decisions. A possible way of overcoming the difficulties caused by the complexity of the housing market is to use a well-established house price index. In the present home value calculator, we use the Case–Shiller Index, a repeat-sales house price index for the United States. The most accurate home valuations are done by locally licensed, certified professionals. There is a charge for these and they take longer to complete, but they are able to account for a variety of different factors that can affect a specific property individually. To calculate the Redfin Estimate, we combine hundreds of data points about the market, the neighborhood, and the home itself—all to provide you with the most accurate home-valuation tools.

The calculator divides that total by 12 months to adjust your monthly mortgage payment. Average annual premiums usually cost less than 1% of the home price and protect your liability as the property owner and insure against hazards, loss, etc. Get pre-qualified by a lender to see an even more accurate estimate of your monthly mortgage payment. It is always important to remember that these are not universal suggestions and do not guarantee specific outcomes. Decisions are better taken in consultation with a real estate professional, while factoring in your unique situation like your budget and local housing market conditions.

Despite this fact, our Home Value Estimator is not a substitute for an appraisal. While most lenders do not accept AVM estimates as a replacement for a full appraisal in the loan process, there are some loan products for which lenders may use an AVM as part of the appraisal process. What these tools can provide is a ballpark estimate when you’re considering selling your home, buying a new one, or taking out a mortgage for a home purchase or refinance.

Most home loans require at least 3% of the price of the home as a down payment. Although it's a myth that a 20% down payment is required to obtain a loan, keep in mind that the higher your down payment, the lower your monthly payment. A 20% down payment also allows you to avoid paying private mortgage insurance on your loan.

A CMA is a free report prepared personally by one of our agents that compares your home to similar properties in your neighborhood that are currently for sale or have recently been sold. For the most accurate estimate, contact us to request a Comparable Market Analysis (CMA). This report is personally prepared to give you a clear understanding of competing properties, market trends, and recent sales in your area.

This is the percentage of transactions for which the Zestimate was within 5% of the transaction price. The Redfin Estimate History graph provides a look back at how a home's value changes over time. The Redfin Estimate value each month represents the Redfin Estimate average of all the days in that month. This may differ slightly from the Redfin Estimate displayed in the Home Report email, which shows a point-in-time value for a given day rather than a monthly average. You can follow the article to the next section, where we explain one of the methods of evaluating home prices or simply use the home value calculator.

It displays basic details of the home, such as the property type, square footage and number of bedrooms, alongside its estimated value. One unique offering here is a value history, showing an estimate of how the home’s value changed over the past 20 years. You can also use the tool to compare the property to similar homes in the area.

The stated margin of error is 2.04 percent for on-market homes and 6.38 percent for off-market homes. It updates the estimates every day for on-market homes and weekly for off-market homes. While the Zestimate is the estimated market value for an individual home, the Estimated Sale Range describes the range in which a sale price is predicted to fall, including low and high estimated values. For example, a Zestimate may be $260,503, while the Estimated Sale Range is $226,638 to $307,394. A wider range generally indicates a more uncertain Zestimate, which might be the result of unique home factors or less data available for the region or that particular home. It’s important to consider the size of the Estimated Sale Range because it offers important context about the Zestimate’s anticipated accuracy.

In the simplest terms, the Zestimate for on-market homes includes listing data that provides valuable signals about the home’s eventual sale price. The Redfin Estimate is highly accurate, with a current median error rate of just 2.02% for homes that are for sale, and 6.28% for off market homes. This means that when a home that is currently on the market sells, the Redfin Estimate will be within 2.02% of the sales price half of the time. For off-market homes, the Redfin Estimate will be within 6.28% of the eventual sales price half the time. The Redfin Estimate is more accurate for homes that are for sale because there is more data available about those homes. Automated home value estimators are useful, but they can’t replace the human expertise of a real estate agent or professional appraiser.

The key ingredient to home price trends is how much buyers are actually willing and able to pay for a home in the current market, weighing all the economic factors that go along with making that calculation. One factor often quoted when thinking about how a home’s value goes up (or down) is the fundamental concept of supply and demand. In short, when there are more buyers than available homes, buyers will find themselves competing amongst one another, bringing home prices up. The size and usable space of your home and property, along with the age and condition, will also weigh heavily into its calculated market value. You may choose to invest in renovating your living space, which can increase how much a buyer is willing to pay for it. This includes the local school district, as well as your home’s proximity to employment, entertainment and natural resources.

However, if the updates are not significant enough to affect the home’s value, your Zestimate may not change. Zestimates for all homes update daily, but on rare occasions this schedule is interrupted by algorithmic changes or new analytical features. To ensure the most accurate Zestimate, report all home updates to your local tax assessor.

Just like there are numerous external factors driving home values up, the same goes for when your home’s value declines.

If you have excellent credit with a 20% down payment, a conventional loan may be a great option, as it usually offers lower interest rates without private mortgage insurance (PMI). You can still obtain a conventional loan with less than a 20% down payment, but PMI will be required. Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) is calculated based on your credit score and amount of down payment. If your loan amount is greater than 80% of the home purchase price, lenders require insurance on their investment. By analyzing real estate market trends, you may be able to get a rough estimate of your home's value by considering how much prices have grown since you bought your home. For example, if you've owned your home for five years and property prices in your area have grown by 10% that time, you can use your original home price + 10% as a general ballpark of what your home should be worth.

If you’re shopping for a home, you’ll be able to estimate your homebuying budget and find great prospects to match. It will also be useful to check other similar homes in the area to make sure your offer is competitive. Homeowner's insurance is based on the home price, and is expressed as an annual premium.

You can compare valuations to a seller’s listing price or keep an eye on a specific neighborhood that you wish to move to in the future. RE/MAX, one of the biggest real estate brokerages in the country, starts its estimation process by asking for the address of the property. Then it requests confirmation of a few details, including the number of bedrooms and bathrooms and the square footage of the home. One drawback of this tool is that you cannot include half-baths in the calculation — it only allows for whole numbers. Once you provide the details, the tool displays two automated estimates from two different companies. Bankrate’s easy-to-use home value estimator requires only your street address.

As the centuries rolled on, the castle saw changes in ownership, but its significance as a cultural touchstone remained unchanged. Dunalastair Castle is more than just a historical site; it’s a narrative of Scotland’s soul. Its walls may be in ruins, but its stories are as alive as ever, resonating with the echoes of a bygone era.

I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free. Docents were placed throughout the home to offer insight but it was nice to get to walk around on our own. The biggest bummer is that you cannot take photography indoors.

Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955. In 1963 the home became The Magic Castle, home to the Academy of Magical Arts. If you ever have the chance to step inside this spectacular place please do not hesitate to do so. This adorable home stands out on the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. The rumor is that this house was owned by Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. You can park in one of the beach parking lots and walk down to the home or park by one of the neighbors.

They are now fully equipped with everything you would need for your comfort and enjoyment. The house’s contents were sold in the mid fifties after the current owner’s grandmother’s death and the house was badly vandalised in the sixties when the lead was stolen from the roof. In those days it was not viable to repair it and no grants were available and it deteriorated very quickly from then on with most removable parts being stolen. The great poet chieftain, Alexander Robertson of Struan, a staunch Jacobite, lived in a house called the Hermitage which is thought to have been on the site of or near to the present Dunalastair House.
